If you need help right now: the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline answers day or night, free and confidential. In the United States, call or text 988, or chat online at 988lifeline.org. In an emergency, 911. Outside the United States, the room asks where you are and gives your country’s line; the lines we have verified are listed on the Sign Up page.

WRITING YOUR STORY

Some stories should never be lost.

Writing Your Story

Because time should not get the final word.

Built, testing · The microphone (talk to Rye)

Hear the welcome.

Welcome to Writing Your Story

Welcome to Writing Your Story.

You have lived a long life, and it is full of stories. Some your family has heard many times. Some no one has ever heard at all.

This is a place to tell them, in your own words and in your own way.

Writing Your Story is a companion that helps you tell the story of your life, and keeps it. Your companion is called Rye. Rye listens, asks gently when it helps, and remembers where you left off.

Talk to Rye out loud, where your browser can listen: press the microphone, speak, and hear what it heard before anything is sent — the microphone turns itself off after. Or type, or let your device’s own dictation type for you. Rye’s words are read aloud to you. Talking out loud is new, and not yet tested on every phone and computer; adding photographs is coming.

Every line is read back to you. Keep it, change it, or take it out. Nothing goes into your book until you say it is right.

Nothing is invented. Not a memory, not a feeling, not a person you did not give us. If the page needs something you have not said, Rye asks, and waits.

You remain in control. You decide what goes in, how it sounds, and who ever sees it.

Said plainly, once: $19.95 a month. One person per license. Unlimited writing. Cancel any time. Sign-up opens soon.

And if a day ever grows heavy, help comes first, before anything else. The crisis line is at the foot of every page.

You lived it. You tell it. We help you preserve it.

Welcome. Take all the time you like.

Begin My Story

What a family is left with

A person who may never call themselves a writer can still leave their story behind. And when they are finished, their family has something that did not exist before:

Their words.
Their memories.
Still here.

Built, testing · The microphone (talk to Rye)

Here are the short answers. Inside the room — at the door on this site — you can ask your companion any of these too: type it, or let your device’s own dictation type it for you, and the answer is read aloud to you.

What do I do now?

Listen to the welcome if you like, then press Begin My Story. It takes you to Sign Up, where two things are all you need.

Where was I last time?

Inside the room, your companion keeps the record. When you come back it says so — Good to see you again. Last time we were talking about … — and reads your own last words back to you, your words and not a summary of them, then offers to continue there, start somewhere else, look at a photograph, listen to music, or just talk.

Can I just talk?

Yes. Talking is a whole visit. Nothing has to become a book unless you say so.

What is this place?

A companion that helps you tell the story of your life in your own words, and keeps it. Why we created it says why.

What does it cost?

$19.95 a month. One person per license. Unlimited writing. Cancel any time. Sign-up opens soon; Sign Up says how.

Can you help me?

Inside the room, ask your companion anything — “What do I do now?” is a fine first question — and it answers in plain words. Or write to us: info@lovingmywords.com. A person reads every letter.

Can I use this with no hands at all?

On these pages, yes: after one touch on the first page (a click, a key, or someone typing begin for you), or no touch at all when the site is installed as an app on your computer or phone, say begin, then say where you want to go. Inside the room, your device’s own voice control can press the microphone for you (“click Press to talk”), and every question after that is said aloud and answered by voice; the microphone turns itself off after each turn. That is proven on the house’s own test browser and not yet on real devices — the Ways in page at the door says what has been tested.
